You can be an outstanding Information Technology Consultant if you have these 6 top qualities. According to PayScale.com, “An Information Technology (IT) Consultant earns median salary of $71,887 per year in the United States.” And, that’s just an average!
So what if you wanted to become an outstanding IT consultant so you could potentially earn even more salary? What 6 top qualities would you need? Well, let’s take a look. These are not in any special order; they are just what I have researched and think are the most important:
Qualities of an Information Technology Consultant
It is typical for the majority of information technology consultant positions to require candidates to have a bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or a similar field. Broken down even further, these IT programs usually include coursework in programming, database and networking fundamentals, information security and systems architecture. In addition to having the necessary education, you will want to get hands-on expertise that you possess from work experience.
In order to become an outstanding Information Technology consultant, you will want to stay up-to-date on new technology, trends and certifications. When working with clients, you will need to gain an understanding of the client’s existing IT infrastructure so you can offer up recommendations and solutions that will apply to their company, as well as be able to document new and better ways to streamline processes.
Customer Service Oriented
Let’s face it. You are going to be working with people – along with the technology. That means you are going to need good people skills. You are going to need good communication skills. Yes, that means you are also going to need to be a good listener, ask open-ended questions and get clarification on anything that you might not thoroughly understand – all while providing a comprehensive customer service experience. Don’t forget to keep your client up to date with regular status reports as to progress and/or delays.
Being an outstanding information technology consultant is going to mean your analytical skills will need to be put into play, whether you use the Plan, Do, Check and Act (PDCA) problem solving methodology or some other method. Be persistent in developing the best solution for your client, be meticulous about it, and be able to think outside of the box when coming up with those solutions.
When you have someone work on your car, whom would you prefer – someone that was lackadaisical with a devil may care attitude or someone that greeted you with a smile and an “I can do” attitude? I’m sure you would feel much more comfortable with the “I can do” attitude, wouldn’t you? So will your clients. Give them the reassurance that you have the expertise to take care of them by acting like you know your craft – and of course you do or you wouldn’t be the outstanding IT consultant that you are.
It doesn’t take an Einstein to be organized; it takes working intelligently and efficiently. There are several things consultants can do to stay organized including things like planning your day, practicing good time management techniques and knowing what you’ll need and having it there with you.
When you are either off site or onsite, you are representing your company. You are qualified, trained, practiced and the best at what you do. Provide quality and on-time delivery each time you are working with a client, incorporate the 6 top qualities I’ve mentioned above and you will be the outstanding Information Technology Consultant that you strive to be.
You are a great information technology consultant, but why don’t you consider becoming an outstanding IT consultant by following the qualities above. By doing so, you not only will be able to command a better salary, but you also can rest in the self-assurance that you are the best.
